Bronx Burners Running Club, a South Bronx-based nonprofit organization, today announced that it is pledging up to $100,000 toward the revitalization, and future programming of the historic Joe Yancey Track and Field at Macombs Dam Park, one of New York City's most significant community athletic spaces.
The pledge is intended to help catalyze the final phase of a broader public-private effort to restore the track
and field to a modern, safe, and accessible standard for residents, student-athletes, youth programs, and
community organizations across the Bronx.
$48 million of the $52 million required initiate the full project has already been secured and allocated by the city, with the remaining $4 million needed to unlock the full revitalization of the area. "The Joe Yancey Track is a historic community asset, a home for youth development, and a symbol of what investment in the South Bronx can look like" said Rob Dalto, Co-Founder and President of Bronx Burners Running Club. "The Bronx Burners is pledging funding and facilitating this campaign because we believe this is the moment to demonstrate commitment to the community, bring this project to reality, and support the community for years to come. We are seeking lead philanthropic, corporate, and civic partners to join to close the remaining capital gap and create a long-term programming fund to support youth running, mentorship, scholarships, wellness initiatives, and community activation at the rebuilt facility."
The Joe Yancey Track and Field has long served as a cornerstone for recreation, youth development, and
athletic excellence in the Bronx. Named for Joe Yancey, co-founder of the New York Pioneer Club, the site is
deeply connected to the history of integrated running, New York City track and field, and community sport.
Bronx Community Board 4 has expressed strong support for Bronx Burners' leadership in advancing the
project.
Bronx Burners will continue to work with public officials, NYC Parks, Bronx Community Board 4, community organizations, and prospective funders to identify funding pathways and ensure that any private support is aligned with the public project requirements.
The Bronx Burners are organizing a public showing up support, to be held at Joseph Yancey Track from 6-7pm on Wednesday June 3rd, and anticipate media coverage, public officials, and a large turnout from local organizations who utilize the Track & Field facility.
